1 itemHow to Choose a Power Rack or Smith Machine
Smart things to know before you buy — and mistakes to avoid.
Power rack vs. Smith machine — which is right for you?
A power rack allows free-weight barbell training in all planes of motion with full safety catches. A Smith machine guides the barbell along a fixed vertical (or angled) track — great for beginners or users training alone without a spotter. Many serious lifters own both.
Check your ceiling height first
Full power racks typically stand 82–90 inches tall. If your ceiling is under 8 feet, a half rack or low-profile rack may be a better fit. Always add 4–6 inches above the rack for bar clearance on overhead presses.
Weight capacity matters for serious lifters
Budget racks may have 500–600 lb weight capacities. Commercial-grade racks support 1,000+ lbs. If you plan to squat or deadlift heavy, invest in a rack rated for your max load plus a safety buffer.
Don't forget you need a barbell and plates
Power racks and Smith machines require separate bars and weight plates (unless you choose a Smith machine with built-in weight stacks). Browse our Bars & Weights section for compatible Olympic barbells and plates.
Consider bolt-down options for safety
Many power racks can be anchored to the floor with hardware — this is recommended if the rack will be used for heavy overhead pressing or if it will be used by unsupervised users. We can advise on anchoring during assembly.
Smith machines with weight stacks are all-in-one
Some Smith machines include one or two built-in weight stacks with cable attachments — turning them into a hybrid power rack and cable machine. These are especially popular in OKC home gyms where space is limited.
Professional assembly is available separately through Redhawk Handyman Services.
