How to Choose the Right Weight Bench
Smart things to know before you buy — and mistakes to avoid.
Flat vs. adjustable — which should you buy?
If you only press heavy and want maximum stability, a flat bench is ideal — it's stiffer and more stable than most adjustable benches. If you want incline and decline press options, an adjustable FID bench offers more exercise variety for a similar price.
Check the weight capacity, not just the bench weight
Budget benches often have weight ratings of 300–400 lbs (user + weights combined). If you're a heavier user pressing significant weight, look for commercial-grade benches rated at 600–1,000 lbs for long-term safety and durability.
Pad thickness matters for comfort
Thinner pads (2–3 inches) are firmer and offer better stability for heavy pressing. Thicker pads (3–4 inches) are more comfortable for general use. For heavy powerlifting, firmer is better — you want a stable contact surface.
Adjustable bench wobble is a real concern
Many cheap adjustable benches wobble on incline positions. Look for benches with a wide base, heavy-gauge steel, and positive locking mechanisms at each incline position. Body-Solid adjustable benches are known for their stability.
Consider your rack setup
If you're using a bench inside a power rack or squat rack, make sure the bench dimensions are compatible. Some benches are too wide or too tall for certain rack uprights. We can help confirm compatibility at checkout.
Professional assembly is available separately through Redhawk Handyman Services.
