How to Choose Barbells, Plates & Dumbbells

Smart things to know before you buy — and mistakes to avoid.

1

Olympic vs. standard bars — know the difference

Olympic barbells have 2-inch sleeves and are designed for Olympic weight plates. Standard bars have 1-inch sleeves and use standard plates. Almost all serious home gyms use Olympic equipment. If you're buying a power rack or plate-loaded machine, you need an Olympic barbell and Olympic plates.

2

Bumper plates vs. iron plates

Bumper plates are rubber and designed to be dropped safely — essential for Olympic lifting and CrossFit-style workouts. Iron plates are more compact and economical for general strength training. For garage gyms with concrete floors, rubber bumpers or a lifting platform are recommended.

3

How much weight do I need to start?

A beginner strength training setup typically needs a 45 lb Olympic barbell plus 200–300 lbs of plates. As you progress, add more plates in smaller denominations. Starting with 4x45s, 4x25s, 4x10s, and 4x5s covers most beginner-to-intermediate needs.

4

Adjustable dumbbells save space

A set of fixed dumbbells from 5–50 lbs can take up significant floor and rack space. Adjustable dumbbell systems replace an entire rack in a single compact unit — ideal for apartment gyms, bedroom gyms, and smaller home setups.

5

Don't skip barbell collars

Barbell collars prevent weight plates from sliding during lifts — a serious safety issue on uneven floor surfaces or during dynamic movements. Spring collars are affordable; locking collars are more secure for heavy training.

Professional assembly is available separately through Redhawk Handyman Services.
